Form follows function. Good construction follows good design, and good design is concerned with both aesthetics and utility. This film puts forward the hypothesis that an article aimed at utility, designed in accordance with technical accuracy, without conscious concern for its effect upon the senses, is artistically satisfying and structurally sound.
This film illustrates how the industrial designers approach the task at hand. First they are careful to ascertain the exact purpose for which the product is intended, only then can they proceed with the actual design. The thesis is that good things come about by design, not by accident. Made by The National Film Board 1950. Directed by Geoffrey Collings.
