Fuels with low octane numbers may pre-ignite in an engine and cause knocking. Knocking happens when pre-ignition rattles the piston in the cylinder. This is inefficient, noisy and damaging.
The more branched or aromatic the hydrocarbon, the higher the octane number.
So Dr Atkinson's name is Ron then? No, he was acting, silly.
