[Filmed on 2013-10-13.] A quick look at what is inside an antenna/cable balun.
This is also known as a VHF/UHF matching transformer, a 300 ohm to 75 ohm converter/transformer, and a coaxial cable to open (antenna) lead adapter. These are frequently used to connect older TV antennas in addition to homemade TV antennas. If you are looking to buy one, Lowe's Home Improvement carries the RCA model for $4; they can also be found at many local dollar/99 cent stores (but not Dollar Tree).
Inside the balun, the wire from the open screw terminals goes through a ferrite magnet which converts it from 300 ohm to 75 ohm impedance. After it passes the magnet, it is soldered to the female coaxial cable socket's pin and shield.
